As I mentioned in a previous post I recently switched over to Boxee for all my digital content needs. My initial Boxee setup was done with an Apple Mac Mini. The installation/configuration process in that case was extremely simple. The first Boxee Media Center worked out so well that I wanted a second one to replace digital cable and Tivo in the bedroom as well. I have a second Mac Mini, but it is a bit older and I quickly realized it would not work with Boxee since they do not support the G4 chip. In addition to Mac OS X boxee also supports Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10. So I decided to tear apart some old boxes I had laying around from past MythTV experiments and build a myself a new Boxee Media Center with Ubuntu 8.10. The Boxee setup process for Ubuntu 8.10 was not as simple and so I wanted to document it here for the benefit of others. |

Well
that's debatable and many hard core Linux users would beg to differ. The major Linux distributions have matured to the point that they are quite usable as everyday desktop operating systems now and in many cases are actually better than their proprietary counterparts. However, some people do enjoy Windows and/or need it for their day job so perhaps there is middle ground for these folks. After all people probably want to experiment and/or test a bit anyway before making the big switch permanently. |

You might be asking yourself why is he doing an article on securing Linux? I thought Linux was already secure. The truth is Linux is very secure. When compared to Windows, Linux has less viruses, less critical vulnerabilities, more frequent updates, faster security patches, no spyware, and the list goes on. The fact is that design of Linux (modeled after UNIX) is more secure from the ground up. So why then write this article? Read on.

For
those of you familiar with UNIX making the transition to Linux is a
breeze.
Those of you coming from Windows this will be quite an
adjustment.
Luckily, it has gotten much easier over time. Now with great
desktop environments like KDE & Gnome the need to hit the command
line to perform basic operations is minimal. Average
users who will utilize there PC for email, chatting, and browsing the
net can probably skip this section as it will be more information than
you need. |

Imagine being able to take your Linux system wherever you go so that
you can connect to the Internet, create&edit Office documents,
listen to music, watch movies, check emails, and do just about anything
you can imagine from wherever you happen to be! |
